FTP: uploading your website's files

With an FTP program (for example FileZilla) you copy your website's files from your computer to the server. The access details are in the dashboard: Hosting → website name → FTP.

In the FTP access box you find:

In FileZilla: File → Site Manager → New site, protocol FTP, encryption Require explicit FTP over TLS, then host, port, username and password. On the first connection accept the server's certificate.

The website's public files go in the www folder: that is what people see at your domain's address.

The password

The main user's password is not shown on the page. From the ⋮ menu of the box you can:

• Change password: we generate a new one and you see it only once. The old one stops working immediately, so update it in your FTP program.
• Send the password by email: we send it to your account's email address.

Additional FTP users

They let you give access to someone else (for example whoever builds your website) without sharing your password, even limited to a single folder.

1. Click + New FTP user.
2. Username: lowercase letters and digits. The full name starts with the main user (e.g. user_mario).
3. Folder: leave it empty for the whole website, or type a folder inside www (e.g. blog): the user will only see that one.
4. Click Create user: the generated password appears only once, copy it straight away.

In the list, from each user's ⋮ menu: Change password, Send the password by email, Disable / Enable (the user cannot connect but is kept, with files and password) and Delete (the files stay on the website).

The number of FTP users depends on the plan and includes the main one: when you reach it, the + New FTP user button is greyed out.

If you can't connect

• Make sure you use port 12121 and explicit FTP over TLS, not plain FTP or SFTP.
• If you changed the password in the dashboard, update the one saved in your program.
• A Disabled user cannot connect until you enable it again.
